Iceland: Our excellent adventure

August 24th, 2007 by Paul Goodison

I’m back with my family (wife, daughter 9, sons 6 & 5) from the wonders of Iceland. It certainly is an incredible place and lived up to Lee’s billing see here. The Land of Ice and Fire it certainly is and for a family holiday an excellent adventure!

I am in a volcano
I’m in a Volcano!

Nothing about Iceland let me down at all, and its very difficult to choose a favourite bit. If pushed I’d plump for our walk up the Stakkholtsgja gorge, to a hidden waterfall, climbing up and drinking from the glacial flow! With 3 children, that really was an adventure, and something we would never have done on our own (we wouldn’t have known it was there!).

The view is great and you can jump streams!

Every day there was ’something brilliant to see’ (quoting my daughter):

  • Geysir: to see the geysers
  • Gulfoss: to see what is a simply breathtaking sight and the photos do not do it justice
  • Thingvellir: the Parliament plain and the gorge where you get to be on two continents at once!
  • Beaches and walks in the Snaefellsnes peninsula, especially a drop through a hole in the rock to a gorgeous pebble beach
  • Being blown away, by the wind, on the top of a volcano crater at the tip of the Snaefellsnes peninsula
  • Climbing and then sliding down the snowfall on the glacier of Snaefellsjokull (I haven’t had so much fun in years)
  • A boat trip from Stykkisholmur where we saw a family of eagles nesting and got to see the urchins, crabs and oysters from the fjord bed
  • Whale watching out of Reykjavik - we saw 2 Minkie Whales and harbour porpoises
  • And the Museum of Iceland where the children got to wear Viking and Icelandic clothes!

Waterfall
I just walked behind the waterfall.

Gulfoss
Gulfoss is beatifully scary (especially with me in the picture)

Thingvellir
Rocky demonstrating how to stand in two Continents at once

And there was more. The food wasn’t at all bad either and all the Icelandic people we met seemed to be very happy to help you out, with their impeccable English.
